About the Book

From indie-lit darling Adam Wilson comes his debut novel, FLATSCREEN, a funny, voice-driven, coming-of-age story about a young man trying to become a new person in a world where nothing is new. A hilariously voiced suburban epic, FLATSCREEN tells the story of a family on the brink of dissolution. Eli, a drug-taking high-school dropout, cannot find momentum in his life. He was raised on television, and every effort to put his life in order feels like a hackneyed TV plot. Over and over, he is pathetically defeated by ennui and disgraces himself in ever more embarrassing ways. Benjy, Eli's older brother, seems to be the model son. He excels at college, has a beautiful girlfriend, and is every way the opposite of Eli. Their mother, just divorced, has become a fixture on the couch, where she commiserates with a bottomless glass of Chardonnay. When Eli and his mother move to a smaller house, an unlikely figure enters their life: a sadomasochistic cripple named Kahn, who kicks off a speed-fueled sexual circus in their old home. Kahn was once in the movies. In fact, he holds the record for most screen credits on IMDB. And while his fortunes have since turned, by setting the most flagrantly awful example possible, he teaches Eli an invaluable lesson. By story's end, roles have been reversed, reputations have been resurrected, the police have been called (several times actually), and Eli finds a redemption he can call his own. Adam Wilson is irrepressibly hilarious, and FLATSCREEN marks the debut of an exciting new comic voice.
