As many people know already‚ it′s Chrestomanci′s job to control the magic in the related worlds. Using magic is always dangerous‚ and it always has consequences‚ so even the best−intentioned witch or warlock needs help and guidance from time to time. Not only that‚ but there are plenty of ordinary people in the worlds without even a whiff of magical ability‚ and they need someone to make sure that the magic−users don′t get their own way all of the time. Even so‚ in the village around Chrestomanci Castle‚ all sorts of magical misuse is going on which very few people seem to be aware of!
When Cat Chant finds the egg in Gammer Pinhoe′s attic‚ he knows he has to have it. Marianne Pinhoe isn′t sure what Gammer will think about that‚ but she lets him take it anyway. Rumour has it it′s an elephant egg‚ but Cat′s convinced it′s a dragon′s egg. Within the safety of Chrestomanci Castle‚ the egg eventually hatches − and at the same time‚ chaos breaks out in the surrounding village. Can Cat and Marianne get to the root of the problem‚ and can Cat′s new charge help?

Critical Praise for
The Pinhoe Egg
Praise for CONRAD’S FATE"CONRAD'S FATE is quintessential Chrestomanci -- funny, smart, twisty, exciting, tricky, delightful and always perfectly magical." Neil Gaiman“Diana Wynne Jones ought to be crowned with coloured garlands because she is the best writer of magical fantasy for children in this country … you’ll gleefully swallow Conrad’s Fate as another unpredictable dose of animal spirits.” Evening Standard“Diana Wynne Jones could teach Stephen King and JK Rowling a thing or two … [she] has a skill for inserting just the right amount of detail in her written words, leaving you satiated but not stuffed.” SFX“This witty, satisfying story can be read on its own, but is much richer when read as part of the series. It's a must for all Jones fans.” School Library Journal“A wild romp with a fast-paced and satisfying conclusion, Conrad's humorous adventures will appeal to Christopher's existing fans and Jones neophytes alike.” Kirkus
Reader Reviews from First Look
10+. A remarkable spellbinding read. The characters Marianne and Cat are full of substance as they take the reader on a journey of escapism. Witches, enchantresses and obstacles to overcome are placed strategically within a fast paced story line. The discovery of the egg by Cat and what it is, is a surprising climax in itself. Cat and Marianne discover their true potential and what is in store for their future whilst learning at the castle and having fun! This story is told in an easy readable manner and well constructed. I would recommend this book to an age group of 12+ and to any adult or child who loves a good yarn to do with spells, witches and mischievous incidents. Well constructed with real characters and my own personal favourite character was Gammer ( a real hoot!)

Excellent read - and Im an adult - my 12 year old loved it too!!!
Witches and spells gone wrong - or have they???
Something odd is afoot and it is up to the younger enchanters to sort it out - Cat and Marianne.

Having not read the Charmed Life, I had found this book and the characters to be easy to follow. My son and I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were different and there were many twists and turns in the storyline. A book that young adults - both boys and girls, would love. An intriguing story deep in the world of magic. The imps, fairy folk and griffins have long been forgotten. When a strange egg is found hidden in the attic of Gammers old house, interests are peaked. For the Pinhoe clan, their Gammer is acting stranger than usual; the Farleigh clan is having some trouble with plagues. It’s left to Cat and Marianne to help solve the mystery of the forests and try to bring peace to the clans and surrounding woodlands with a little help from the Big Man. I can’t wait to read the next book in this world of wonder and magic.

An easy to read book filled with fantasy and magic. A delightful journey through childrens eyes. My seven year old found it entertaining and didn't want it to end.
