Critical Praise for
stub title9780007263417
Praise for ‘Friendly Fire’:‘Utterly compelling from first to last: sad and funny and written with the matchlessly fine yet modest prose that marks him out as such a superb writer.’ Stephen Fry‘“Friendly Fire” is another triumph for Gale. It is part of an oeuvre which looks ever more formidable, particularly for a novelist still in mid-career.' Richard Canning, Independent‘“Friendly Fire” is an intense tale of love, life, intellectualism and passion. Inspirational.' Daily ExpressPraise for ‘Rough Music’:'Like the sea he describes so well, Patrick Gale's clear, unforced prose sucks one in effortlessly…he is excellent at the telling detail and description.' Elizabeth Buchan, Daily Mail'There are no false notes in this book.' Marie Claire‘“Rough Music”…is an astute, sensitive and at times tragically uncomfortable meditation on sex, lies and family…a fabulously unnerving book…a hugely compelling writer.' Independent on Sunday
Reader Reviews from First Look
Madness and creativity have for centuries been linked. The madness of the artist, the writer, the poet, is an accepted stereotype. This book, however, goes deeply into the issue, showing the beauty in the madness, and the ugliness as well.
The story of Rachel Kelly, an artist, is told from different points of view, stripping away Rachel’s layers and showing glimpses of the true person inside. The story works as a look at art, insanity, family, belonging, Quakers, love. All of these are important to the characters and are described with delicate care. The non-linear structure works as a way of keeping the reader’s mind open, so assumptions aren’t made, or not with a feeling of certainty anyway.
An immensely satisfying book, ‘Notes from and Exhibition’ made me think and re-think almost everything – reading the book was unnerving but exhilarating journey.

Patrick Gale's new Novel "Notes from an Exhibition" was a wonderful book that kept me spell-bound from start to finish. The book focuses on how family ties bind us together, even as we struggle against them. It makes you realise that the influence of a strong personality within the family has long-lasting repercussions which can be both wonderful and dreadful. "Notes from an Exhibition" also gives the reader an insight into the Quaker Religion. The stillness and peace of a Quaker Church Service is the perfect antidote to daily life filled with great ups and downs. The book gives us insight into the amazing ability of children to deal with a non-conventional and often difficult childhood, and also focuses on the different ways siblings respond to the same influences. Whilst some of the subject matter was emotionally difficult, I nevertheless found this a positive and uplifting read.

This beautifully written book, tells the story of Rachel Kelly. Using paintings at a retrospective exhibition as the springboard for each chapter, Patrick Gale adds colour and texture to the superb narrative; the reader learning bit by bit, picture by picture, about the artist's troubled life and relationships. Like a good art exhibition, this is a book to savour at your leisure, rather than rush through and miss the detail.
