"A suspenseful fable...satisfying."
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
"Only someone Jesuit-trained could bring to Scripture the kind of coolly passionate imagination on display in Coelho’s latest novel."
Philadelphia Inquirer
"Coelho, whose Alchemist is a favorite of everyone from Bill Clinton to Will Smith, closes his ‘On the Seventh Day Trilogy’ with The Devil and Miss Prym."
San Antonio Express-News
Reader Reviews from First Look
"The Devil and Miss Prym is a quiet parable about the recurring inner struggle between good and evil in each one of us. Set in Viscos—a remote, bucolic village not yet scarred by technology, but nonetheless decimated by the loss of its youth and talent to the city—it is a fertile field for the Devil’s work. The pulling apart of family and overwhelming willingness of this population to leave behind the familiar and yield to the infatuation of the unknown is itself a parable of good struggling with evil—an enticement as pernicious as the bargain the Devil makes with Miss Prym. And while good triumphs in the grander scheme of things, the tarnished village and its inhabitants remain chastised yet still in danger . . ."

"Paulo Coelho is a masterful storyteller. The Devil and Miss Prym is filled with suspense, and I was captivated from the first page. It reads quickly because of the level of suspense, but my advice to the reader would be to read it slowly to absorb Mr. Coelho's beautiful and unique writing style. I look forward to Mr. Coelho's future gems of storytelling."
Beth (Chula Vista, CA)
"… In this poignant story, by Paul Coelho, we see how one man has agonized for years over humanity's goodness. In a quest to find the answer, he brings his anguish on a small town that must wrestle with the choice between good and evil. How they choose and justify their choice is played out on the pages of this captivating read. What would you do if faced with the temptation of wealth for one evil deed? That is the question we are left with and we each must strive to answer. This book should be on everyone's reading list."
Sue (Elmhurst, IL)
"A creative take on the age-old Good vs. Evil theme. The Devil and Miss Prym is populated with richly drawn characters that I couldn't help feeling for—their struggles, their conflicts, their hopes and dreams and ambitions. Coelho’s wonderful way with words made this an easy read and conveyed his message without preaching at the reader. This was a delightful read that I will happily recommend to others, and I'll be watching for more books by this author."

"This was my first experience reading Paulo Coelho, and I can't wait to read another one of his books. I have always enjoyed fiction from Central and South America, but it has been years since I read some. Mr. Coelho's book brought back the pleasure I have found in authors like Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Jorge Amado. Like these other authors, Coelho's writing works on two levels—I enjoyed simply reading the story and appreciating the characters, the setting, and the plot. At the same time, there are wonderful, rich messages just below the surface. Over and over again, elements of the book made me stop and think more carefully—things people said, shifts in the plot, and descriptions of the setting and the events. The principal characters are great, and the interplay between the heroine, Chantal, and the stranger will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend this book."

"Paulo Coelho is, first and foremost, an extraordinarily masterful storyteller! He brings the struggle between good and evil that all of us face at some time into sharp focus in The Devil and Miss Prym. This was a book I just couldn’t put down!—I had to know what Miss Prym was going to do. And, in the process, it made me think about what I would do in the same situation. I loved this book! It is definitely one I will come back to and read again and again."
Rosemary (Laguna Hills, CA)
"I feel so lucky to have discovered Paulo Coelho! The struggles with temptation and good vs. evil in this book were outstanding, and the pages kept turning until the book was complete. I now have to get copies of the other two books in the trilogy, as well as Coelho's other books. I'm hooked!"
Ruth (Groveton, NH)
"This novel, perhaps even more than Paulo Coelho's many other unforgettable and deeply spiritual works, should be required reading for the whole world. Using the setting of a village that could be anywhere in the world, and thus everywhere, Coelho challenges his readers, using his landmark gentle, fairy-tale like parables, to confront the age-old question of whether human beings are intrinsically good or evil. After the 20th century's horrific wars, numerous genocides and 9/11, Coelho's question is very much one for our time, and for all time. After setting up a situation in which a stranger offers the villagers huge wealth to commit a crime, and thus prove that man is basically evil, Coelho twists the tale again and again with simple, yet deeply complex, stories about the village's past. Each story challenges the reader to confront the same questions himself and to delve deeply into his own heart. The Devil and Miss Prym is a book to read slowly, parable by parable, and to ponder in the time between pages. It is a book to share not just with the usual book clubs, but to read with family, friends, even church groups. It is a book to read again and again to help us live in our own troubled times and to give us hope for the future of mankind. Coelho is an author the world very much needs."
June (Lansdale, PA)
"Coelho succeeds yet again in capturing the magic of life and its hardships in The Devil and Miss Prym. Like his other novels, Coelho infuses mythical and often diabolical characters into his text, weaving an utterly unique tale of the struggle to simply live life as we want to. The constant struggle between good and evil has been a subject for religious traditions and philosophical beliefs for centuries, and Coelho is able to bring this primitive and fundamental struggle to light in his latest novel. Highly recommended!"
Lee (Pittsburgh, PA)
"A great read. Coelho tackles a difficult subject with insight and compassion. A very thought-provoking novel—I am intrigued to read the other two books in the trilogy."
