Jane Covernton of Working Title Press announces retirement;

HarperCollins Publishers to acquire Working Title Press

SYDNEY, ADELAIDE – Tuesday 13th June, 2017

In a joint statement with Working Title Press, HarperCollins Publishers today announces its intention to acquire the Working Title Press list and imprint, effective from 1 July, 2017. This acquisition comes as owner and publisher of Working Title Press, Jane Covernton, decides to retire.

Under the direction of Jane Covernton and with a 20 year history, Working Title Press has become one of Australia’s most acclaimed independent children’s publishers. Working Title Press has focused on showcasing the work of new and established writers and illustrators, and on introducing children to the power of story – with a particular emphasis on Australian and indigenous stories.

Of her decision to retire and the transfer of ownership to HarperCollins, Jane says, ‘It is never an easy decision to leave a job you love. My 35 years in the Australian children’s publishing industry have given me great joy and immense satisfaction. I feel lucky to have spent time in the company of so many creative and intelligent authors, illustrators and publishing colleagues, and to have had so much fun along the way.

‘I believe that the professionalism and passion that HarperCollins brings to publishing will ensure the very best outcome for the books and the creators who have chosen to be part of the Working Title Press story over the past 20 years, and I am luckier still, to have found a publisher who shares my enthusiasm for the books and the people who are part of the Working Title Press history.

Cristina Cappelluto, Publishing Director of HarperCollins Children’s Books says, ‘I am so admiring of the books that Jane has published over the course of her amazing career and enormously proud that HarperCollins will uphold Jane’s legacy of identifying and nurturing stellar authors and illustrators. We look forward to welcoming these wonderful creators to the HarperCollins family.

‘Sitting alongside our two other Australian imprints – Angus & Robertson and ABC Books – the Working Title Press imprint will continue to showcase the very best Australian stories and we look forward to sharing them even more broadly with current and future generations of Australian children.’

As a consequence of this acquisition, distribution of Working Title Press titles will move to Harper Entertainment Distribution Services (from United Book Distributors) from 1 July, 2017.
