FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, 10 March 2020
HarperCollins Publishers Australia is thrilled to announce it has acquired global rights to Man in Armour, the powerful and hard-hitting debut novel by leading business insider Siobhan McKenna.
Set in the testosterone-driven, high-powered, brutal world of big money and big deals, Man in Armour is a story about Charles, a man in crisis. Each day, Charles puts on a metaphorical suit of armour and goes out into a dog-eat-dog world to do deals as an investment banker. He’s a man familiar with casual brutality – his childhood saw to that. But there has been a price to pay. Now, at the peak of his career, his armour is rusted and bloodstained and no longer providing the protection it used to. He finds himself empty. Always cold. No friends. A distant wife. Children who barely know him.
Over the course of two days, everything in Charles’s life comes into question. His carefully constructed world starts to splinter apart – and he’s splintering too.
Shocking and at times immensely moving, Man in Armour is a compelling story of a man at the end of his tether, written with a sharp-eyed, incisive focus that also carries real emotional and moral resonance. Written by an ultimate business insider – a woman who knows intimately and at first hand this world of power, money and deal-making – this novel carries an undeniable authenticity and force.
Catherine Milne, Head of Fiction and Fourth Estate Publisher, said, ‘When I first read Man in Armour, something about it just grabbed me by the throat and did not let go. I read it with a kind of fascinated compulsion – half horror, half pity for this man who has so protected himself, he’s cut himself off from the world. This is a novel of genuine, extraordinary power, which gives us a glimpse into a fascinating world – totally foreign to most of us – which we can barely comprehend.’
Siobhan McKenna said, ‘I have been writing fiction for a long time and I am very pleased that my debut novel, Man in Armour, has been acquired by HarperCollins. I hope it provides readers with a glimpse into the dark side of my world. A world in which the path to success reshapes everyone, often to the point where even the most resilient don’t recognise themselves.’
Ms McKenna is a director of a number of listed and non-listed Australian companies including Foxtel and Woolworths. She is a former Commissioner of the Australian Productivity Commission, a former Chairman of the NBN, and a former Partner of McKinsey & Company. Siobhan holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from the Australian National University and a Master of Philosophy (International Relations) from Cambridge University.
Man in Armour will be published by HarperCollins under the Fourth Estate imprint on 5 August 2020.
