The Fabulous Bouvier Sisters
THE TRAGIC and GLAMOROUS LIVES of JACKIE and LEE
SAM KASHNER and NANCY SCHOENBERGER
To this day, Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill remain endlessly fascinating, at once evoking timeless elegance and a singular moment in history when the nation’s most powerful people were brilliant, inspirational, and aspirational. Yet, for all that has been written about these impeccable paragons of grace and class, an essential chapter of their narrative has been untold … until now. A moving, immersive, and utterly irresistible account, THE FABULOUS BOUVIER SISTERS: The Tragic and Glamorous Lives of Jackie and Lee draws from exclusive and extensive interviews with Lee and delves deep into the nuances of their sisterly bond.
This addictively readable dual biography from the authors of Furious Love offers a rare and intimate look at these larger-than-life figures. Venturing beyond the mystique, Vanity Fair contributing editor Sam Kashner and acclaimed biographer Nancy Schoenberger reveal the public and private lives of these fabled sisters while illuminating the full story of their complicated relationship.
Strong independent spirits, Jackie and Lee were similar in many ways. Creative, stylish, and artistic, these cultural enthusiasts shared a keen eye for beauty in all its forms. They were raised by their formidable mother in a pre-feminist era to marry for wealth and security. But they sought their entire lives to overcome that upbringing and become more than decorative socialites, pursuing their own work and dreams to make their mark on the world. After Jackie died in 1994, her will — in which she bequeathed nothing to Lee, not even a lone Bouvier family heirloom — exposed their complex dynamic for all to see. From their privileged if dysfunctional childhood to the legendary White House years and beyond, their celebrated closeness was often undermined by envy, ego, and rivalry, as Lee sought to come to terms with Jackie’s iconic status. Unfolding against a gilded backdrop and featuring recollections from a star-studded cast of characters, what emerges ultimately in these pages is a transfixing portrait of a relationship that, for all of its ups and downs, was perhaps the most important one of both of their lives.
Sam Kashner is the author of the comic novel Sinatraland and four nonfiction books, including the acclaimed memoir When I Was Cool. He has written extensively for Vanity Fair.
